Customer goal: Reduce Diesel consumption by 90% or more on an off grid island.
Result: This system, installed in 2011, provides energy to a small group of houses in which NPS staff reside. In addition to the 15,000 watts of solar installed with battery storage, AC units were replaced with 24 SEER ultra high efficiency units, appliances were replaced with energy star units, the lighting was replace with CFL lighting with many control circuits and the clothes dryers and stoves replaced with propane-based units. During summer heat and afternoon storms, the generator runs about 2 hours every third day which is lower than we had initially anticipated (95% reduction of diesel-generated power in summer). During winter, the generators only run during the coldest of days when heat is needed.

Inverters: Four battery backed inverters and seven solar inverters were installed.
